SELEX Galileo signs authorisation to proceed to deliver EO payload for Meteosat programme

SELEX Galileo, a Finmeccanica company, has received the authorisation to proceed for the first tranche of a contract with MTG prime contractor Thales Alenia Space France to supply Lightning Imager Instruments for the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) weather forecasting fleet. The overall potential contract value is about €50M, the first tranche of which has been placed.

The overall contract will see SELEX Galileo supplying four Lightning Imager Instruments, each of which will be installed on one of the MTG constellation’s imaging satellites. The instruments will detect lightning discharges (inter-cloud and cloud-to-ground), continuously observing Europe, Africa and part of South America day and night. The data will then be used for short term weather forecasting (known as ‘nowcasting’) and to assess the influence of climate change on the atmosphere. The MTG programme, funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) and EUMETSAT, is planned to be launched in 2017.

“This contract further cements our position as a leader in electro-optical instruments for Space missions.” said SELEX Galileo’s CEO Fabrizio Giulianini, adding “Once we have completed this and the second tranche of deliveries, which will be worth a further €40M, the Meteosat Third Generation will be the primary European source of geostationary lightning observation.”
